Introduction: Turning a Traditional Industry into an Online Business
Anupam Mittal is one of India’s most recognised entrepreneurs and startup investors. As the founder of Shaadi.com and the People Group, he helped bring an age-old Indian tradition—arranged matchmaking—into the digital age. His entrepreneurial journey demonstrates how technology can transform an established industry by making an existing service more accessible, convenient and scalable.
Before online matchmaking became widely accepted, finding a suitable marriage partner often depended on relatives, community networks, newspaper advertisements and professional marriage brokers. These methods could be effective, but they were limited by geography, personal connections and the number of prospective matches a family could discover. Mittal saw an opportunity to use the internet to make this process more organised and accessible.
Shaadi.com emerged from that insight and developed into a recognised matchmaking platform serving users in India and overseas. Its journey offers important lessons about identifying market gaps, building customer trust, monetising digital services and adapting to changing consumer behaviour.
Mittal’s public profile grew further through his role as an investor on Shark Tank India, where he evaluates startup pitches and advises entrepreneurs. However, his entrepreneurial credentials were established long before television brought him into millions of Indian homes. The story of Shaadi.com is fundamentally a story about understanding a traditional customer need and building a digital business around it.
Who Is Anupam Mittal?
Anupam Mittal is an entrepreneur, investor and business leader associated with Shaadi.com and the People Group. He studied in the United States, including at Boston College, and gained professional experience before returning to India to focus on internet-based businesses.
During the late 1990s, the internet was still an emerging commercial medium in India. Online shopping, digital payments and mobile applications had not yet become part of everyday life for most consumers. Building an internet company therefore required more than developing a website. Entrepreneurs had to convince customers that an online service could be useful, reliable and worth paying for.
Mittal entered this environment with an interest in building technology-led businesses. His early work included helping businesses establish an internet presence. Through this experience, he gained an understanding of how online platforms could connect people, organise information and create new commercial opportunities.
His entrepreneurial approach was particularly suited to the internet because digital platforms can serve a much larger audience than many traditional service businesses. A local matchmaking consultant might know families within a limited area, whereas an online platform could connect individuals across cities and countries.
Mittal’s subsequent work as an angel investor expanded his involvement in the startup ecosystem. His appearance on Shark Tank India introduced him to a broader audience, but Shaadi.com remains the business most closely associated with his entrepreneurial journey.
How the Idea for Shaadi.com Emerged
The idea behind Shaadi.com was inspired by the limitations of traditional matchmaking. In an interview with Knowledge at Wharton, Mittal discussed how the experience of encountering a traditional marriage broker helped him think about the possibilities of internet-based matchmaking.
A marriage broker traditionally relied on personal contacts, family networks and physical records of prospective brides and grooms. Finding a suitable match depended partly on how many people the broker knew and how efficiently information could be shared between families.
Mittal recognised that the internet could change these constraints. Instead of limiting matchmaking to a local network, an online platform could allow individuals and families to discover profiles across a much wider geographical area. Users could provide information about themselves, describe their preferences and search for potential partners without depending entirely on a third party.
The business began in 1997 under the name Sagaai.com and subsequently evolved into Shaadi.com. The concept was straightforward: use technology to make the search for a life partner more accessible while retaining the cultural context and seriousness associated with marriage.
The opportunity was substantial because matchmaking is not an occasional consumer purchase in the conventional sense. It is a highly personal decision involving preferences, family expectations, social compatibility and long-term commitments. A platform that could make the discovery process easier had the potential to create meaningful value for its users.
However, the concept also presented a challenge. In the late 1990s, internet adoption was limited, and many families were unfamiliar with the idea of searching for marriage partners online. Shaadi.com therefore had to build both a service and confidence in the new way of using that service.
The Early Challenges of Building an Internet Business in India
Launching Shaadi.com in the early internet era was very different from launching a startup today. Entrepreneurs now have access to smartphones, social media, digital advertising, online payment systems and established e-commerce infrastructure. In the late 1990s, these resources were far less developed.
Internet access was limited, and many potential customers were hesitant to share personal information online. The idea of using a website to find a marriage partner also challenged established social practices. For families accustomed to introductions through relatives and community networks, digital matchmaking required a shift in behaviour.
The company had to explain why online profiles could be useful and why a larger pool of prospective matches could improve the search process. It also needed to encourage people to register and provide enough information to make the platform valuable.
These early challenges illustrate an important principle in entrepreneurship: creating a product is only one part of building a market. When a startup introduces a new way of doing something, it must also educate customers, address their concerns and demonstrate why changing their behaviour is worthwhile.
The internet provided the technical infrastructure, but the business depended on trust and adoption. Shaadi.com’s growth required both.
Understanding Shaadi.com’s Business Model
Shaadi.com’s business model is built around connecting people seeking marriage partners and providing tools and services that make the search process more effective. Users can create profiles, discover potential matches and explore basic platform features. Paid membership plans provide access to additional capabilities, with the exact features depending on the plan and current offering.
This freemium structure helps reduce the barrier to entry. A prospective user can explore the platform before deciding whether a paid membership is worthwhile. The company can attract a broad user base while generating revenue from customers who want greater access or additional services.
The model also reflects the nature of the matchmaking market. People do not necessarily want to pay simply to create a profile. They are more likely to pay when they believe the platform can help them discover relevant matches, communicate with prospective partners or make progress towards their goal.
Consequently, the business must balance the size of its user base with the quality of the experience. A large number of registrations is not enough if profiles are inactive, matches are irrelevant or users struggle to establish meaningful connections.
Shaadi.com has also offered specialised matchmaking services, including premium services designed for users seeking more personalised assistance. These services can serve customers who value human guidance, discretion and a more curated experience.
The broader lesson is that a digital platform can use a combination of self-service technology and higher-value personalised services. Different customers have different needs, and a well-designed business model can create multiple revenue opportunities without abandoning its core proposition.
Why Subscription Revenue Matters
Subscription revenue is an important part of Shaadi.com’s commercial model. Instead of relying entirely on advertising, the company can charge users for membership features that help them engage more effectively with the platform.
A subscription model creates a direct relationship between the value customers perceive and the revenue the company earns. If users believe that paid features improve their matchmaking experience, they have a reason to purchase membership. If the service fails to meet their expectations, however, they may decide not to renew.
This makes customer satisfaction particularly important. The platform must provide relevant profiles, useful search tools, an accessible interface and a reasonable level of privacy. It must also communicate clearly what users receive when they purchase a paid plan.
Subscription businesses need to monitor several indicators, including the conversion of free users into paying members, renewal rates, customer acquisition costs and the revenue generated per paying customer. These measures help management understand whether the business is growing sustainably.
For entrepreneurs, Shaadi.com’s model illustrates why monetisation should be considered early in a digital venture. Free users can help create activity and improve the usefulness of a platform, but the company must have a credible path towards generating revenue if it wants to build a sustainable business.
The Importance of Trust, Privacy and Customer Experience
Matchmaking is different from many other online services because users share sensitive personal information. Profiles may include photographs, educational backgrounds, occupations, family details and preferences relating to marriage. Users also expect discretion when exploring prospective partners.
Trust is therefore central to the business. A platform that attracts a large audience but does not protect user privacy can undermine its own value. Users must feel comfortable creating profiles, controlling their information and deciding how to interact with potential matches.
Shaadi.com has emphasised privacy, customer support and improved matchmaking experiences in its stated mission. Its official mission and promise describes the company’s focus on relevant matches, customer service and protecting member privacy.
Customer experience also influences the platform’s reputation. A person searching for a life partner may spend considerable time reviewing profiles, communicating with other users and evaluating compatibility. Poor search results, fake profiles or unresponsive members can reduce confidence in the service.
The company must therefore address not only technology and marketing but also profile quality, user safety, support and expectations. This is an important lesson for founders in any industry where trust is essential to purchasing decisions.
Businesses dealing with finance, healthcare, education or personal relationships face a similar challenge: trust cannot be added as an afterthought. It must be incorporated into the product and operating model.
Competition and the Changing Matchmaking Market
Shaadi.com operates in a market shaped by changing social attitudes, greater internet adoption and competition from other matrimonial platforms. Digital matchmaking has become more familiar to Indian consumers, and users can choose from several services catering to different communities, regions and preferences.
Competition has pushed platforms to improve their technology, customer support, profile verification and matchmaking tools. It has also made customer acquisition more challenging. When users can compare several services, a company must communicate why its platform is worth choosing.
The market is also changing because individuals increasingly expect greater control over the search process. Some users prefer family involvement, while others want to explore potential partners independently before involving relatives. Different age groups and communities may have different expectations about privacy, compatibility and communication.
A successful platform must accommodate this diversity without making the experience confusing. Search filters, profile preferences, communication features and personalised support can help serve different customer needs.
Competition also creates pressure to maintain brand relevance. A company with a long operating history cannot assume that past recognition guarantees future growth. It must continue improving its service and adapting to customer expectations.
For Shaadi.com, the enduring opportunity lies in combining its brand experience and matchmaking expertise with modern technology while preserving the trust required for such a personal service.
How Technology Is Shaping the Future of Shaadi.com
Technology has transformed the way matchmaking platforms operate. Search algorithms can help users identify profiles based on selected preferences, while data analysis can support improvements in relevance and user experience. Mobile applications also make it easier for users to access the service across locations and throughout the day.
Shaadi.com has increasingly highlighted the role of artificial intelligence alongside human understanding. In principle, AI can help organise large volumes of profile information, improve recommendations and make parts of the customer journey more efficient. The value of these tools depends on the quality of the underlying data and how effectively they address genuine user needs.
However, matchmaking cannot be reduced entirely to an algorithm. Compatibility involves personal values, communication styles, family expectations and individual circumstances that may not be fully captured by profile fields. Technology can help people discover potential partners, but users must still make their own decisions.
The company therefore has an opportunity to combine automated discovery with human support. Premium matchmaking services can offer guidance to customers who prefer a more personalised approach, while digital tools can make the broader platform more convenient.
This hybrid approach offers a lesson for entrepreneurs: automation is most useful when it improves the customer experience rather than merely reducing human involvement. The right balance depends on the nature of the service and the expectations of its customers.
Anupam Mittal’s Journey Beyond Shaadi.com
Mittal’s work extends beyond matchmaking. Through the People Group, he has been associated with internet businesses and consumer-facing digital services. His experience as a founder has also informed his role as an investor in startups.
On Shark Tank India, Mittal evaluates businesses across sectors, including consumer products, technology, food, services and lifestyle categories. His role has helped introduce the concepts of startup funding, business valuation, equity and investor negotiations to a much wider Indian audience.
The connection between founding and investing is significant. Building a company gives an entrepreneur practical experience of customer acquisition, cash flow, hiring, product development and market competition. Investing, meanwhile, requires evaluating whether another founder has identified a genuine opportunity and can build a sustainable business around it.
Mittal’s journey demonstrates that entrepreneurship can evolve over time. A founder may initially focus on building one company, then use the experience and networks gained to support other businesses.
For readers of BusinessMinds.in, this is a useful reminder that entrepreneurial success is not limited to launching a single venture. Experience can create opportunities in mentorship, investing, leadership and the broader startup ecosystem.
Business Lessons Entrepreneurs Can Learn from Anupam Mittal
The first lesson from Shaadi.com’s journey is to look for inefficiencies in traditional industries. The founders of successful digital businesses do not always invent entirely new customer needs. Often, they identify a familiar problem and find a better way to solve it. Traditional matchmaking already existed, but the internet made it possible to expand the search beyond local networks.
The second lesson is to understand the customer before choosing the technology. Shaadi.com was not valuable simply because it operated online. Its value came from helping users find and evaluate prospective partners. Entrepreneurs should begin by identifying what customers need to accomplish and then select the technology that makes the process easier.
The third lesson is to build trust into the business model. In sensitive markets, customers need confidence that their information will be handled responsibly and that the service will respect their needs. Privacy, transparency and customer support can become meaningful competitive advantages.
The fourth lesson is to create a sustainable revenue model. Shaadi.com’s membership approach shows how a digital platform can provide basic access while charging for additional value. Entrepreneurs should identify which customers are willing to pay, what benefits justify the price and how the business can encourage repeat engagement.
The fifth lesson is to adapt as customer behaviour changes. Internet adoption, smartphones, AI and changing social expectations have transformed matchmaking. Businesses must keep improving rather than assume that an established brand will remain relevant automatically.
Finally, the journey illustrates the importance of patience. Building a market for a new service takes time, particularly when customers must change familiar habits. Founders need to invest in education, customer experience and credibility while maintaining financial discipline.
Conclusion: Building a Business Around a Timeless Human Need
Anupam Mittal’s journey with Shaadi.com is a compelling example of how an entrepreneur can use technology to modernise a traditional industry. By recognising the limitations of conventional matchmaking and creating a platform that expanded access to prospective partners, he helped establish online matchmaking as a recognised service in India.
The business model combines digital discovery, membership revenue and specialised services. Its continued relevance depends on customer trust, profile quality, privacy, useful technology and the ability to respond to changing expectations.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, Shaadi.com’s most important lesson is that successful businesses often emerge from understanding a fundamental human need and improving the way it is served. Technology provides the means, but customer insight creates the opportunity.
Mittal’s story also demonstrates that building a sustainable company requires more than an initial idea. It demands years of adaptation, commercial discipline and attention to the people who use the service. In a competitive digital economy, businesses that combine innovation with trust and customer value have a stronger foundation for long-term success.
